The National Games 2025 is currently underway in Uttarakhand.

Into its 38th edition, the National Games, India’s own multi-sport event inspired by the Olympics, will see athletes from 28 states, eight Union Territories and the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) compete for medals in 32 different sports.

The 2025 National Games kicked off with the triathlon events on January 26. Sarungbam Athouba Meitei won the men’s individual triathlon event to log the first gold medal of the competition in Manipur’s favour.

Maharashtra’s Dolly Devidas Patil won the women’s individual triathlon crown and helped her team claim top podium in the triathlon mixed relay as well, with Parth Sachin Miraje, Kaushik Vinay Malandkar, and Mansi Vinod Mohi as teammates.

The overall winner of the National Games is awarded the Raja Bhalindra Singh Trophy for each edition. The champion state is judged based on points scored – which are earned based on finishing positions in the events.

Mostly, the medal tally toppers end up as the champions.

Karnataka currently lead the National Games 2025 medals table with seven medals – five golds and two silvers. So far, five teams have won at least one gold medal at the National Games 2025.

Since the Games were revamped in 1985, Services, a team composed of Army personnel, have emerged as the National Games champions the most number of times – four. Current holders Maharashtra are three-time winners.

The National Games 2025 will feature some top athletes from India, including Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain (boxing), Swapnil Kusale, Sarabjot Singh and Vijay Kumar (shooting).

Tajinderpal Singh Toor (shot put), Parul Chaudhary (3000m steeplechase), Ancy Sojan Edappilly (long jump), Jyothi Yarraji (100m hurdles) and Amoj Jacob (400m) are some of the other big names to look out for in athletics events.
